The Canal de Castilla, one of the most important engineering works in 18th century Spain

It crosses the town of Villaherreros in the province of Palencia. This town is located on the North Branch of the canal

that connects Alar del Rey with the town of Calahorra de Ribas (Palencia).
Canal de Castilla

As it passes through Villaherreros, the canal preserves part of its original structure, which allows us to appreciate the importance that this project had for the region.
The canal was designed primarily as a waterway to facilitate the transport of goods, especially grain, from the interior of Castile to the northern ports, mainly Santander. This section follows the rural landscape of Tierra de Campos, an extensive agricultural plain, highlighting the symbiosis between hydraulic engineering and the natural environment.
The passage of the canal through Villaherreros is surrounded by farmland and cereal fields. Here the canal is a mute witness to the agricultural boom of the region, where cereals were transported by barges until the 19th century. Although no longer used for commercial purposes today, the canal and its surroundings have been recovered as part of natural and tourist heritage, and attracts visitors for its scenic beauty and historical importance.
Canal de Castilla
In addition to its historical value, the canal in this area is ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling or quiet walks along the water,
offering a way to discover the Castilian landscape in its most traditional and authentic facet.
